Historical and traditional

Its name originates from Nahuatl, meaning "site or place of temporary shelters or dwellings," which can be interpreted as housing for fairs, markets, or commerce. From our origins, we are a people of migrants and merchants. Inhabited by indigenous peoples of Chorotega and Nahuatl origin, names like Posoltega and Chichigalpa are still preserved, reflecting their cultural heritage and an agricultural tradition that has endured through time.

Volcanoes and imposing landscapes

The majestic San Cristóbal volcano, the highest in the country, is known as the guardian of the west and offers spectacular views from its summit. Nearby, the historic Cosigüina volcano stands out for its natural beauty, its crater lake, and the viewpoint overlooking the three countries (Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador). Also noteworthy is the Casita volcano, surrounded by coffee plantations and abundant vegetation that create a cool and pleasant climate.

With its pristine natural environment, the department is home to the Estero Padre Ramos Natural Reserve, one of Nicaragua's Pacific treasures, boasting extensive mangroves and a great diversity of marine species, making it ideal for ecotourism. It also features the Llanos de Apacunca Genetic Resources Reserve, created to protect teosinte, a unique endemic primitive corn variety, within the Estero Real Delta conservation area, a prime location for migratory birdwatching.
