San Francisco Libre is located northeast of the department of Managua. Originally called "St Francis of the Butcher", due to the constant movement of recently butchered animals from San Francisco, on the Managua boardwalk, generating the popular name that became official over time, until in 1979 it was replaced by San Francisco Libre. 

A town of fishermen, nature lovers and fighters at heart for the common good. Visiting this municipality is to find new natural beauties and a true coexistence with the rural area of ​​Managua.

The municipality of San Francisco Libre is located 79 kilometers from the capital. It limits to the north with the municipality of Ciudad Darío, to the south with Lake Managua, to the east with Tipitapa and to the west with El Jicaral.

The fundamental economic activity of the municipality is based on livestock and fishing. The cultivation of sorghum, corn, beans and sesame stands out for its importance. Most of the production is directed to local consumption.

To visit San Francisco Libre you must take a collective transport unit in the bus terminal of the Iván Montenegro Market, or in the El Mayoreo Market located in Managua, bound for this municipality.

By private vehicle you can take the North Pan-American Highway and at kilometer 41, near the Empalme de San Benito, turn left.
