On September 15, 1907, the town was elevated to a town with the name of “Villa del Carmen”. According to oral tradition, the name was chosen because the settlers took the image of the Virgen del Carmen, built a small hermitage and designated the virgin as the patron saint of the town.

Privileged municipality with an extensive coastline that offers the opportunity to enjoy the sun and the beach, prehistoric culture, bird watching, spawning observation and protection of three of the world's endangered sea turtles: turtle, Tora, Hawksbill turtle and the Paslama turtle, as well as an immense wealth of marine-coastal fauna conducive to lovers of nature observation.

Villa El Carmen is located 42 kilometers from Managua. It limits to the north with the municipality of Mateare, to the northeast with the municipality of Ciudad Sandino, to the south with the municipality of San Rafael del Sur, to the southeast with the municipality of El Crucero, to the east with the municipality of Managua and to the west with the municipality of Nagarote.

The main economic activities of the municipality are agriculture and livestock. Agriculture has the crops of sugar cane, corn, beans, sorghum, sesame, banana, some vegetables and fruits. Livestock has a dual purpose: for milk and meat production.

The municipality can be reached from Managua through intercity buses that leave from the terminal of the Israel Lewites Market towards San Cayetano - Villa El Carmen or from the Ricardo Morales terminal located in the Oriental Market through the buses that go to the municipality and the spa of Pochomil.

In a private vehicle, you travel along the Carretera Vieja a León until you find a detour that leads to the beaches of Pochomil, Masachapa and Montelimar.
